Essay for Project #1

The phone was invented in 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison who are two of the people accredited with the invention of the phone. The basic principle for the phone is to send information verbally great distances quickly and easily. Using a wire to carry sound waves in between two points, one can hear another even if he is not in the vicinity of the other. The first ever words to be spoken through such a method was from Alexander Graham Bell to his friend Watson exclaiming “Watson, come here. I want to see you!”

Using the description of what a sound wave should look like, I decided to incorporate it into my design by arching the patterns for ‘sounds’ and ‘voices’ giving them a sound wave-like quality. I also placed them around the ‘Telephone’, the primary vocal point, going towards the two people primarily responsible for the invention of the phone. The two people are also located at opposite ends of the page making it look as if they are communicating with each other. I also put the years of which each respective person documented his discovery. I also put in some text incognito which are the first words said over the phone which, in my opinion, unifies the design.

After I created my design, I noticed a few things that made my design interesting. First, is that everything in the design is mirrored in some fashion. This makes it almost perfectly symmetrical. It also gives the image a ‘playing card’ look to it. Then I thought, Inventing and playing poker are really similar, where in both cases one takes a really big gamble. I also noticed that I placed the ‘Sound’ in a complete ellipse around the mirror ‘telephone’, this makes it look like one of them unification ads where ‘telephone’ is the earth and ‘sound’ is the little people holding hands.

This is a picture of one of the more common waves ie:sin wave.

Poster Design

There is tons of lines in this poster that all go in diagonals. All are in proximity of two figures in the near center of the poster. However, the Title of the movie happens to be much larger in scale in proportion to the two figures making it more profound than the figures. The rhythm of the posture moves pretty fast considering the diagonals that is. It starts with the title which connects to the earth which leads to the run way which leads to the two figures and then back to the lettering which ultimately unifies the piece.
